A major urban problem is air pollution and air
quality. A few years ago it was predicted that a thing called PM2. probably killed 3,389 people in
London in 2010, according to the government agency Public Health England. Like
nitrogen dioxide, they come from diesel combustion (diesel being burned for the creation of energy). Being exposed to air
pollution is associated with increases in deaths from cardiovascular diseases (heart diseases)
such as heart attacks and strokes. The world health organisation has said that
the air pollution in London is worse than in the Asian megacity Beijing which is located in Japan.
Solutions To The Problems
There are a number of solutions to
help the rising issue of air pollution
- Electric
Cars.
The major cause of air pollution in London is from cars and trucks. If they started to use electric cars or at least use hybrid cars the air pollution would definitely decrease.
- Public
Transport
London's Public Transport System
Transport For London is the name of London's public transport system. The system is government run and the mayor of London is in charge of the system. The public transport system aims to cover all over London with its double decker buses, trams, trains (the underground), cruises and they just created a new form to the public transport system that is called Emirates Air Line which is a cable car that goes over the majestic Thames river.
Water Pollution
Another major problem in London is water pollution. With an increasing population and a river in the middle of the city, water pollution was always going to be a problem. The United Kingdom Health Department has said that water pollution is getting worse. In the last 5 years the water pollution has gone up 7%.
